NSure, the Dutch pioneer in molecular Agro-diagnostics, signed an agreement with New Zealand’s Plant & Food Research to explore options for joined product development.
NSure and PFR are both active in the field of optimizing quality monitoring in fruit production by using the latest insights from molecular science. PFR is a renowned research institute in this field and NSure offers commercial services using this technology. In the present co-operation, NSure will be a commercial partner for marketing PFR research results.
NSure has developed methods which measure and predict a wide range of quality aspects in fruit, vegetables and ornamentals using a unique molecular technology. The measurement method is based on the activity of a selected set of plant genes. Being highly accurate, the patented NSure technology has large advantages over current testing methods and has proven to be a solid basis for the commercial success of the company. Six months after the start up, NSure introduced the first commercial molecular test - in this case for predicting pear maturity - in the Netherlands. Since 2008 NSure tests have been sold in other West-European countries, such as Germany, Sweden, Austria, Italy and France. More recently representations and test labs were established in Chile, the USA and South Africa.
Plant & Food Research is a New Zealand-based science company providing research and development that adds value to fruit, vegetable, crop and food products. With over 900 people based at sites across New Zealand, as well as in the USA and Australia, at the heart of the Institute is a goal to underpin the growth of plant and marine-based industry through the successful application and commercialisation of research-based innovation. Part of the research Plant & Food Research conducts in the field of genomics is closely related to the technology that NSure is using for molecular agro-diagnostics. Plant & Food has a strong interest in valorisation of itsresearch results, which will allow the agro-industry in New Zealand and abroad to make use of the latest scientific developments for the improvement of products and processes. NSure is interested in expanding its product portfolio with new tests that are of value to the industry and will thus allow the company to serve its customers better. The present agreement is an opportunityfor both companies to translate state-of-the-art scientific data into practical and useful tools for growers and marketers of fresh produce.
Initially NSure and Plant & Food will explore possibilities for the development of tests for kiwifruit and apples. NSure is also planning to establish a presence in New Zealand within the next year. The first commercial tests resulting from this collaboration can be expected on the market in 2012.
